Why We Started TeRatana.Com - Character, Culture, and the Reality of the Grind
Sending two teenage sons across the world to chase a pro dream splits your heart across two oceans. Why we built this platform — the raw truth, no corporate filters.
Let’s be completely honest. Sending your teenage sons halfway across the world to chase a professional dream is not for the faint-hearted. It is a beautiful, brutal contradiction that stretches your heart across two different oceans. On one hand, you see your boys kitted out by international brands, flying on private jets to high-stakes tournaments, calling you from courtside seats at the Celtics, or proudly putting on the black singlet.
On the other hand, you are sitting at your kitchen table in New Zealand at stupid o'clock, crying into a buffering laptop screen because the live stream cut out. Or trying to manage a flu strain you don't even recognize from an impossible distance, jumping every time your phone buzzes, hoping it’s a reply to the WhatsApp message you sent 24 hours ago or simply drowning in all the paperwork and schedules across two continents.

Despite all of that we have created this platform for a few distinct reasons:
- Our Village: For those who genuinely love the boys and want to back them on this journey.
- The Noise: For the curious, the nosey, and the sceptics (Tall Poppy Syndrome is alive and well, and hey, that’s fine by us too!).
- The Reality: Because there are plenty of Kiwis doing great things over there, but nobody is sharing openly about the real highs, lows, and day-to-day grind.
- Our Narrative: We are in a unique position to share what we want to share about the boys' journey, straight from the source.
- The Blueprint: For the families asking, "How did you get two boys into the US basketball system? Where do we start?"
- The Business: To build a lasting family brand and turn our hard-earned knowledge into a business.
As Kiwis, we don't usually talk openly about making money or backing ourselves like this, but transparency is our baseline. Through this process, we have been exposed to angles of this space that others could only imagine - some of it, people wouldn't even believe. We aren't saying we are experts, but this is our version based on our experiences so far. We have accumulated a massive blueprint of real-world knowledge, visa hurdles, scouting circuit realities, and athletic travel budgeting. Sharing that blueprint carries real value, and we want to use what we've learned to back the families coming up behind us.
This website is also a dedicated, premium recruitment hub for college coaches and international scouts -because recruitment never stops. Social media is flooded with over-edited creative ploys that miss the truth. This platform is our voice, our truth, and the absolute open book on the raw logistics, financial trade-offs, and administrative headaches behind the privilege. There are far too many people out there assuming, judging, or just making things up. This is The Te Ratana Standard.
The Foundations of The Te Ratana Standard
We are a Māori, Samoan, and Croatian whānau. Our boys carry their bloodlines, their whakapapa, and their tūpuna (ancestors) stitched permanently into the tatau and tā moko on their skin. When Hunter and Cooper step onto the hardwood in places we only dreamed about visiting, they don't just stand tall for a stat sheet - they stand for our entire village.
Navigating the American system means facing a massive culture shock. Over there, the game is a business. It is loud, it is in-your-face, and players play to get theirs. To ensure our boys do not lose themselves in the hype, we anchor them to two non-negotiable family values as well as trying to surround them with good people that we trust.
- The Work Don't Lie: Raw talent might buy you a ticket, but it won't keep you in the room. The court always exposes who did the work in the dark.
- Character is Currency: Accolades and trophies fade, but integrity, humility, and respect define your true value. Take care of home first, be good people, and let character be your greatest asset.
Space Parenting Across the Pacific
Our boys will now be in different US states, grinding for their future. Hunter has recently transitioned into the US College system after an impressive prep stint at the Darrow School and playing for BABC. Cooper has just finished his first AAU season on the Adidas 3SSB circuit with New Heights NYC and now prepping to represent New Zealand, and building his own D1 recruitment profile.
Meanwhile, Val, myself, and their little sister Kyla-Rae are holding down the fort in New Zealand. Parenting a rollercoaster of teenage emotions via FaceTime in between corporate meetings, mortgage deadlines, concrete jobs and basketball coaching - daily operation can be a circus. It means managing and suppressing my own expectations while watching my boys grow up at the hands of others - which is incredibly hard for this territorial mother.
There are days when the distance feels heavy and messages go unanswered. But watching our boys earn Division 1 offers, hit academic honors lists, and grow into resilient, culturally grounded young men makes every single tear worth it. (Mind you, them retiring us one day would make it even more worth it... jokes, not jokes!).
